Modifying my exhaust tips! Is it approved by LTA????

Postby kepiting1sg » Tue Oct 23, 2012 12:21 pm

Dear Guys,

This question has popped up several times!
I wanted to cut off my L/R oval shape exhuast tips on my previous E250 to the "AMG Sport Trapezoidal Shape Exhaust Tips)
This has prompted me to write to LTA to clarify the mods pertaining to modifying your exhaust tips.
According to LTA as long as you do not "touch, weld, drill, etc" on the rear silencer/muffler box is OK with
what you want to do with your exhaust tips.
You may have twin exhaust tips coming out of your muffler, you can cut one or two of your exhaust tips and reroute to Left & Right with dual single L/R or quads L/R.
Anything on the muffler box and before on the exhaust system you will need prior approval from LTA.

This is my email to them & their reply!

Subject: Modification of muffler exhaust tip

Dear Sir,

I understand that changing of the car exhaust muffler needs LTA inspection
and approval.
This I am clear and aware of LTA's policy on car modificadtion.

I have a question to ask pertaining changing only the exhaust tips of the
exhaust mufflers.
If I will to cut off the existing oval shape exhaust tip from my exhaust
muffler at the pipe after the exhaust muffler, replace and weld a
trapezoidal shape exhaust tip at the pipe, is this legal or illegal?
If it's not illegal, do I need to seek LTA's inspection and approval as I
do not do any modification to the muffler box but replacing only the
exhaust tip on the pipe after the exhaust muffler by welding another
exhaust tip on the pipe?
There will be no welding onto the exhaust muffler box but only welding on
the pipe after the exhaust muffler.

Looking forward to your kind enlightenment, I remain

Yours Faithfully

Dear Mr XXX

Please refer to your email dated 12 July 2011.

We would like to inform you that we have no objection to the fitting of
exhaust pipe outlet attachment (by way of welding or screwed on) onto the
original exhaust pipe after the rear muffler so long as this does not
adversely affect the safe operation of the vehicle and the exhaust pipe
outlet attachment is not welded directly to the silencer/muffler. Please
also ensure that the followings are complied with when fitting the exhaust
pipe outlet attachment:

a) the exhaust pipe outlet is installed with sound engineering practice and
must be adequately supported;

there is no modification to the other parts of the exhaust system,
unless approved by us;

c) the exhaust pipe does not protrude longitudinally or laterally from the
vehicle;

d) the exhaust pipe outlet is on the off-side or rear of the vehicle; and

e) the vehicle exhaust continues to comply with the applicable exhaust gas
and noise emission standards

Should you require more information on vehicle modifications, you can visit
our 1M portal for a set of vehicle modification guidelines at
http://www.onemotoring.com.sg.

We hope the above clarifies. Should you require further clarifications,
please do not hesitate to contact us at 1800-CALL-LTA (1800 2255 582).

Yours sincerely

This is taken from VAGSG... Interesting analogy about exhaust mod.

You have a fireplace. You decided to remove the chimney filter, and let the exhaust flow out much faster. But now there is less smoke, yet sometimes cold draft comes down because the flow out is so much faster, so you feel the fireplace is weak, less hot, but actually nothing changes from the burning perspective.

You have two choices: build a bigger fireplace (V6) or put more wood and stoke the fire with more air too (tune up). But that is restricted to the size of your fireplace. You can extend it by adding other gadgets to ensure a faster and more complete burn (other mods), but generally it is cheaper to just add wood and more air (stage 1).

Then you realise in the end, enlarging the chimney slightly from 2.5inches to 2.75 only allows a bit more heat on constant basis but doesn't really do much. Sound also improves, after adding more wood the flame roar is better than stock, but nowhere close to a big gas torch jet fighter sound (V8/V10). You think it sounds V6, but no way an overcrowded fireplace can give you that effect.

Hence some of us just put more wood (stage 1) and go back to sleep. It's warm enough, and we don't have to squabble with the build authorities (LTA) about modifying the chimney, or the accessories to stoke the fire.

I'm sure the contractor who told you to open up the flow of the chimney now has more stuff to sell to you. But do rationalize this analogy, and be wise in your mod journey.
