Subaru WRX / Legacy GT versus Golf GTI

Postby King Mariot » Tue Oct 02, 2012 4:00 pm

I see some of the members here driving other marques (LGT, GTI) during the meet up so I thought i post this question...

Not sure if by any chance anyone had extensively driven the Subaru's LGT/WRX (auto) and Golf GTI before? I know they are not exactly comparing apples to apples (and ignoring the fact that modifications on different levels can be done), but how different is the handling and performance between the Japanese and German say in most stock condition?

i've driven both LGT 2.4 & GTI stage 1.

LGT & GTI handling comparable but more confident on the LGT when taking sharp corners.
GTI lighter, so feels faster when taking off (flooring the accelerator)
GTI gear change is also smoother but maybe because of the DSG gearbox.

Anyway, will update again once I've visit the doc for my LGT.

I agree with Simon that LGT handles better than a GTI in bends by virtue of the fact that it's a AWD. I had a GTI VP1 (stage1) before, & it suffers from severe under steer around the bends. Used the GTI on the track in Sepang & really had embarrassing moments round the bends when the Rexes & Evos overtook me easily. It's only fast if the track is straight.

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback. Nothing beats asking people who have driven the different models on a day by day basis and also on TRACK! I've always liked the way the Subaru handles and pulls and had a chance to drive the Golf for 2 weeks in Europe. Somehow I feel more planted in the Subaru.

Anyway saw this 5th Gear shoot out and the GTI beats the WRX by quite some distance.

I prefer a lower displacement engine with force induction still. Road tax cheaper and got "kick" when you plant your right foot on the accelerator.

with a 2.5l or 3.5l, you can 'do' more things to the performance. the 2l very restricted.
